Pack 33 Families,

Below are the details of Pack 33's September 29 and 30 campout.  But first, let us state that  siblings and other family members are welcome and encouraged to come to all cub scout campouts.

Where:

Watkins Regional Park
301 Watkins Park Drive
Upper Marlboro, MD 20774

Time:

Saturday September 29 to September 30 .  You may arrive at any time at the Park, but we may not set up Camp until 3:00 pm.  Allow about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes drive time from Takoma Park.

RSVP:

Please go to http://tinyurl.com/Pack33FallCampout2012 to let us know if you will be coming, and how many of you there will be.

Food:

  • There is a communal dinner for the entire pack on Saturday night. As in the past, it is a combination of pot luck and pack-provided dinner.  The Pack will provide hamburgers and beef hot dogs as well as some vegetarian items. Families bring sides and deserts to round out the meal.    Please bring a side dish, salad or dessert to share.
  • Breakfast is planned and executed by each Den.  Some fortunate (?) and impartial souls will be identified to visit each den to sample their breakfast offering and award the coveted Golden Spatula to the den with the best breakfast. Criteria are not firm (will it be most cohesive theme, greatest diversity, most delicious, or best use of food coloring this trip?), but bonus points are usually awarded for age-appropriate scout involvement.
  • Please plan on providing your own Saturday and Sunday lunches.
  • PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN PLATES, CUPS AND UTENSILS; THE PACK WILL NOT SUPPLY DISPOSABLE PLATES, CUPS OR UTENSILS DURING THE WEEKEND. Don't bring disposables and other trash that someone else has to carry home in their car!  The Pack will provide a dish washing setup and the boys should be responsible for washing their own plates/etc.

What to Bring:

First, if you need to borrow a tent or anything else to join us, please contact your Den leader or me directly. We can get access to tents and other supplies families might need.

  • Warm clothes and rain gear.  Dress for the low.  It is getting cool at night, so please be sure to bring enough warm clothes for evening and morning.
  • A tent.
  • Families should plan to bring their own NON-DISPOSABLE metal or plastic plates, cups and tableware.  I know, I said this already, but it turns out it is really easy to forget!
  • Whatever you need to cook Sunday morning breakfast.
  • Bring your bike!
  • Sports equipment--frisbees, baseball stuff (the slightly soft balls preferred over hardballs), soccer balls, etc.
  • Dens should bring skits to perform at the campfire.
  • Other folks are welcome (begged, actually) to bring guitars, ukuleles, fiddles, voices, etc. to entertain us.  Jokes and mild ghost stories are also desired.
  • Binoculars and telescopes are strongly encouraged.
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen and insect repellent!

Other items:

·  We will be presenting advancement awards at the campfire.  If your son has recently completed any advancement requirements, please let your Den leader or myself know ASAP.

·  Potable water is readily available.

·  Bathroom facilities are modern/flush toilet.

·  Bring warm clothes and rain gear.

·  Scouts who have earned their whittling chips may bring a pocketknife of the kind approved by Dan.  Any scout with a pocketknife must be carrying their whittling chip and observing all safety rules.  Please go over the rules with your child if they choose to bring a knife as we don't want anyone getting hurt.  Also, we will be enforcing the safety rules and don't want anyone to have their whittling chip revoked.

The Sunday campsite check-out time is 1:00 pm, but we're otherwise welcome to stay in the park, go hiking, mountain biking, play Frisbee, etc.  The carousel, train and miniature gold should still be running.

Weather Concerns:   If weather threatens our plans, the Pack leadership will e-mail a "Go or No-Go" decision by 9:00 am on Saturday Sept. 29 (and sooner if possible). If you don't hear anything the camping is on.

I will follow up with more specific directions to our specific camping sites.  Please let me know if there are any other questions.  Looking forward to seeing you Sept. 29!

Christian Layke (WEBELOS 1 (Den 2) Leader)
